Welcome to Humble, Texas.
Humble is a city in Harris County, Texas within the Houston - Sugar Land - Baytown metropolitan area. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city population was 14,579. Petroleum has been the basis of Humble's economy since its beginning. Loch Energy is headquartered in Humble; the city was the namesake for Humble Oil and Refining Company, which later merged with the Exxon corporation.
The city got its name from one of the original founders/settlers, a successful wildcatter originally from England named Pleasant Smith "Plez" Humble, who opened the first post office in his home and later served as justice of the peace. The proper pronunciation of the city is "umble" (the "H" being silent), as Plez pronounced his last name in that manner.

The first settlers began moving into the Humble area in the early 1800's. Joseph Dunman was thought to be the first person to settle here and was believed to have arrived in 1828. A ferry was built nearby, over the San Jacinto River, and the area of Humble became a center for commercial activity due to the region's large timber industry. Humble became an oil boom town in the early 1900's when oil was first produced there. The first oil was produced a couple years after the famous Spindletop discovery in Beaumont, Texas. Railroad linkage was established in 1904 and shortly thereafter the first tank car of oil was shipped out of Humble's oil field. The Humble oil fields are still active and have produced over 138,835,590 barrels of oil. When the oil boom receded, many land owners returned to truck farming, dairy farming and the timber industry.
Ross S. Sterling, who founded Humble Oil in 1911, once operated a feed store at Humble. His company relocated to Houston in 1912. An oil well drilled in 1912 struck water and the hot sulphur artesian water has been flowing ever since. A bathhouse was set up by a Mrs. Mary Standley who charged .25 per bath (including soap).
The 18-hole "Tour 18" course at the Tour 18 Golf Course Houston facility in Humble, Texas features 6,782 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 72.7 and it has a slope rating of 129 on Bermuda grass. Designed by David Edsall, the Tour 18 golf course opened in 1992. Arnold Palmer Golf Management manages this facility, with Michael Shoelen as the General Manager.
Humble cemetery is believed to be the town of Humble's oldest. The earliest documented burial is that of Joseph Dunman (1867-1879). Also believed to be buried here in an unmarked grave is Jane Elizabeth Humble, wife of the community's founder, Pleasant Humble. The first legal record of the cemetery appears in a deed transferring the cemetery property from Jonas Altmont to trustees in 1914. Civil War veteran Houston Young and several World War I veterans are also interred here. This cemetery serves as a reflection of Humble's pioneer heritage.
An oil well drilled at this site in 1912 yielded not oil, but free-flowing artesian water. The following year, German native Nick Lambrecht (1855-1920) purchased the property. Lambrecht served as justice of the peace and mayor during Humble's oil boom days in the early 20th century and in 1904 had installed a water system to meet the needs of the many oil field workers who came to town. Lambrecht's artesian well was used to supply water to bathhouses and was also piped to nearby homes. In earlier years, water had been hauled to town in barrels on horse-drawn wagons.
